Like biking? Well Gunnison has one of the best trail areas in the state, and some great pavement for road riding too. Gunnison is home to the infamous Rage in the Sage which was a NORBA sanctioned venue, 24 Hrs in the Sage, and Ride the Rockies.
Hartman Rocks, Gunnison’s mountain biking meca, is located just minutes from downtown. The character of Gunnison’s trails are decomposed granite single track and roads that wind and cut through magnificent granite rock spires. Many trails feature slick rock like riding, while others weave through the sage.
Due to the high mountain desert climate riding is most popular when the mountain trails are still under snow in spring, or too wet in the fall. However, the riding season, March or April through often Thanksgiving, is one of the longest in the state. Local camping and nearby lodging can accommodate any budget for a spring or fall getaway.
Gunnison is also home to some long and strenuous rides into some of the more unexplored corners of the county. Check in at the Tune Up to learn more about the area.
Gunnison is not just about mountain biking. Often a stop on the Ride the Rockies Bike Tour, Gunnison is the gateway to some of the state’s best tours and day rides.
